This ancient Bulgarian variety is considered among the oldest in the world. The wine is dedicated to the Thracian warrior Mavrud. Legend tells us that in ancient times, when the cultivation of vines was prohibited, the mother of Mavrud secretly cultivated a small vineyard and made wine. This wine gave Mavrud power and courage and rendered him invincible. When the king discovered this, he named the wine after the warrior Mavrud, and vines were again replanted in the kingdom.
The wine has a bright cherry color. The nose is rich and complex with notes of cherries, red berries and spices. Intense and strong on the palate with silky tannins and a long, fresh finish. The wine is suitable for long aging, upwards of ten years.
Recommended with beef, grilled meats, roasts, game, cheese.
